Darius Miles: University of Alabama basketball player charged with murder in killing of 23-year-old woman

University of Alabama basketball player Darius Miles has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a 23-year-old woman near campus Sunday, Tuscaloosa law enforcement announced.

“We are aware of the recent allegation against student-athlete Darius Miles, and he is no longer a member of the Alabama men’s basketball team,” the University of Alabama athletic department said in a statement Sunday.

Michael Lynn Davis, 20, has also been charged in the shooting, the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit said in a statement. Both suspects have been charged with murder and are being held without bond.

Investigators said Miles was the only person associated with the University of Alabama.

CNN could not determine if the suspects have attorneys.

Police responded to the shooting around 1:45 a.m. local time Sunday and found Jamia Joanne Harris shot to death as she sat in her car about half a mile from the university campus, according to a release from the Violent Crimes Unit.

The driver of the car told police someone had fired a gun at his vehicle and fired in self-defense, possibly hitting one of the suspects, investigators said.

“After processing the footage, speaking with multiple witnesses and viewing video surveillance, two suspects were developed,” the release said.

Investigators said one of the suspects was hit by return gunfire and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

“It appears that the sole purpose of this was that these individuals were involved in a minor altercation with the victim as they were out on The Strip,” said Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy. The Strip is a hub of restaurants and businesses near the university campus.

The university said it is cooperating with the investigation along with the athletic department.

Miles, 21, is a junior at the university and hails from Washington, D.C., according to an archived version of the men’s basketball team roster. Before he was cut from the team, Miles was in his third season as a starter for the Alabama Crimson Tide, an archived roster shows.
