Omaha police officers shot and killed a man suspected of active shooting at a target on Tuesday. Around 12 p.m., officers responded to a target near 178th Street and West Center Road and worked to clear the store, Omaha police said. The shooter was shot and killed by officers, Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmederer said. “With shell casings, there is evidence that he walked into the target and opened fire,” Schmederer said. No civilians were injured during the incident. Omaha police said in a preliminary investigation that the white suspect fired several rounds from an AR-15 rifle. A police scanner analyzing traffic indicated the suspected shooter was dead six minutes after the first call for help. How many shots were fired at this time, the identity of the shooter and what connection, if any, he had to the store. Omaha police said detectives and forensic technicians will be examining the scene through Tuesday night. “We will announce when and how the public can retrieve their vehicles and/or personal items from Target stores,” Omaha Police said on Twitter. “The store will remain closed until then,” Target said. The shooter was shot and killed by officers, Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said.
“There is evidence with the shell casings that he entered the target and opened fire,” Schmaderer said.
No civilians were injured during the incident, Schmaderer said.
Omaha police said a preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, who is white, fired multiple rounds from an AR-15 rifle.
A review of police scanner traffic indicated the suspected shooter was dead six minutes after the first call for help.
There is no word yet on how many shots were fired, who the gunman was or what connection he had to the store.
Omaha police said detectives and forensic technicians will be examining the scene through Tuesday night.
“We will notify the public when and how they can retrieve their vehicles and/or personal items from the Target store after the scene is processed,” Omaha Police said. He said on Twitter.
Target said the store is closed “until further notice.”
“Following an incident at our Omaha West store, we can confirm that all guests and team members have safely evacuated the store. The store will remain closed until further notice. We are working with the Omaha (Police Department) to learn more,” a Target spokesperson said in a statement.
The incident is still under investigation.
